Children must know the importance of respecting and valuing nature from a young age. If, as parents, we teach them to take care of the environment and share good practices and ecological habits with them, it will be much easier for them to internalize the need to care for and preserve the environment.
But how do we make our children understand, for example, that we have to recycle or save energy?
The most important thing is to ensure that they do not see it as an obligation, but as something natural and entertaining, an activity with which they can have fun and, above all, that allows them to share valuable moments with their loved ones.
That is why we propose 6 activities that will help you instill this same behavior in your children in the most original and fun way!
The concept of pollution is often difficult for children to understand. They think that it is in the city and that it causes many diseases, but it is not something tangible for them. We propose a simple exercise that will help them understand its meaning and with which they will later want to contribute to ending pollution. Shall we start?
Ask them to draw on a piece of paper and color it. Put bottle caps on top and leave it outdoors for a few days, always protected from rain and sun. When you remove the plugs, you will see that the areas that were covered up to that moment have the same color as they painted, while those that were not protected have been dyed a grayish color.
Far from what you might think, recycling can become a very exciting activity. Children like to feel useful and important, especially when they take part in something that they perceive as essential for the proper development of the home. Therefore, we must make them understand the importance of recycling and, of course, do it enjoyably and entertainingly! How? Turning recycling into a game. Invite them to decorate the recycling bins by drawing the waste that can be thrown into each container. It will be much easier for them to identify where each one is going, especially if you are improving them since this will arouse their interest and curiosity. You can even organize family competitions to find out who has recycled the most. Who will be the ecological teacher at home this week?
Teaching the little ones why we should save water should be another of our priorities if we want our children to adopt ecological habits. Make them find out for themselves! Place containers under faucets and taps throughout the house so they can see how many drops are lost and encourage them to calculate how much they would save per year if this water was not lost. In case there is a breakdown, try to repair it together. For them, it will be an adventure. And you don't have to stay at home! Suggest that they become real detectives and do the same at school or at their grandparents' house. To investigate!
Practicing outdoor activities helps children connect with nature and value the environment. A very good way to get to know the natural environment is to organize a treasure hunt. Go to a nearby park or even a forest that you know well and leave evidence with clues in different key corners: at a certain point in the river, next to the highest tree, at the entrance. Prepare a map with recycled paper in advance and click your children a compass. They will learn to orient themselves and, above all, they will have a great time!
The crafts are an activity that kids would always go big. What if we try to take advantage of the elements of nature to make their own decorative objects? They can start by collecting chestnuts. With them, they can create, for example, necklaces and bracelets. Walnuts are another of the elements that give a lot of play. And it is that, with the only help of some toothpicks, funny animals can be created, with which later to invent stories and tales. And something that never fails is to challenge them to find original stones, of different shapes and sizes, and then paint at home and make extravagant combinations. Who said playing is expensive?
Letting children see their own food grow will make them feel more responsible and help them appreciate food more. Create your own urban garden and help them discover where the food comes from. Have them plant some seeds and encourage them to observe how from that small grain a plant grows from which later flowers and fruits will sprout. An ideal exercise with which the little ones in the house will have fun and learn to be eco-responsible.
